Artist statement

Perception is my foundation and photography is my primary medium. My works usually grow from a question or an attempt to understand my environments.

As young, I was a dedicated field biologist. Early on I learned that nature tells a lot to those who learn to see the signs. New worlds open up to those who look to the horizon. Therefore it came naturally to me to use landscapes in my art. My interest in Zen Buddhism and alchemy has later led me to techniques such as watercolor and graphics. Techniques that convey the image via the hand.

Regardless of the material, I treat my motifs in the spirit of Zen Buddhism's reverence for all the constituents of the materials and the meticulous accuracy, whether it is the sky or a bottle that is depicted. By interpreting the signs, I can transform them from a bottle into a deep shimmering gem. Every detail in my works is a well-thought-out part of the whole – everything from exposure time to the choice of material is part of the work's reading.

My imagery is currently in the intersection between the human world and that of the sea. I weave a story where the unwanted becomes sublime, where the sea becomes a stage and where the human traces become their own subjects.
